Food Preferences of Winter Finches and Red-breasted Nuthatch

Winter finches that specialize in feeding on tree seeds or weed seeds--Purple Finch, Common Redpoll, Hoary Redpoll, Pine Siskin and Hoary Redpoll--are reportedly feeding primarily at feeders (>75% of the reports). Reports of winter finches that specialize on conifer cones--White-winged Crossbill and Red Crossbill--show them feeding on cones (>80% of the reports). The Survey is also indicating that a large proportion of Pine Grosbeaks are feeding on fruits and berries (> 30% of the reports).
