Send in a checklist or a photo to help the Great Backyard Bird Count and earn a chance to win a prize

1. A drawing for participants

Everyone who submits a checklist will be eligible for a drawing to receive one of numerous birdy prizes (see list below).

  • Audubon birds (10) These plush singing toys are the result of a collaborativeeffort between the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. (Toys will correspond to the 2006 GBBC top-10 most frequently reported birds: Northern Cardinal, Mourning Dove, Dark-eyed Junco, American Goldfinch, Downy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, House Finch, Tufted Titmouse, Black-capped Chickadee, American Crow).

2. Most Checklists

Certificate awards will go to states, provinces, and localities that send in the most GBBC checklists. Here are the categories:

  • Top three provinces

  • Top 5 communities in the United States

  • Top 5 communites in Canada

  • Top community within each state

Once all the checklists are entered and tallied, the winners and their tallies will be posted on this site. Participants from winning communities, states, and provinces, will be able to download and print a certificate from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon.

All photos that are taken during the Great Backyard Bird Count, submitted to us, and chosen to appear in the GBBC Gallery, will be automatically entered. A panel of judges from the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology will choose the top five photos and award certificates to the photographers. Their photos will also receive prominent placement on the web site. The winner of the best overall photo will receive a pair of 8x42 Vortex Sidewinder binoculars, donated by Wild Birds Unlimited.
