The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It's free, fun, and easy-and it helps the birds."

Barred Owl

Contributors: Mark Cresswell/ Ajax, Ontario

Mark was photographing other species when this Barred Owl landed on a tree about 15 feet from him. The bird had the prey in his feet, then transferred it to his mouth, but did not eat his catch right away, instead tucked it into his feathers and just sat there with his eyes closed. Mark goes on to say "While I'm an avid photographer I have never been an avid birder - that is until now. Imagine my luck at not only spotting my first owl but getting to see him with food. I have been out everyday since - I am officially hooked!"
