Alabama 

  • GBBC participation, Friday, 11:00 AM-12:30 PM

Southern Nuclear, Birmingham, AL
The company is hosting it's second year of GBBC participation at the Inverness
Office Complex. Counting is open to all company employees and guests. The property is open for members of the public who wish to count for the GBBC here as well. 

 

California

  • Free GBBC workshops and field trips, sponsored by Sacramento Audubon

These warm -up events include how-to workshop programs followed by basic local bird ID. There is a special how-to-do-it presentation for children and families by an experienced Great Backyard Bird Count family at the Rancho Cordova Library and a birding field trip will be featured at the workshop at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Ancil Hoffman Park.

There are four field trips for beginning birders over the GBBC weekend. Those wishing to participate should contact the trip leader in advance, so sub-leaders can be recruited if numbers get too large. More details at www.sacramentoaudubon.org.

On Friday, February 13, there will be two trips, one to the Yolo Basin Wildlife Area led by Don Tankersley, (916) 359 2829 and the other to Riverbend (formerly Goethe) Park, led by Cathie LaZier (916) 457-6882.

On Saturday, February 14 there will be a trip to Sutter Landing Park at the north end of 28th Street, beyond the railroad tracks.  This will be a special trip for children and families, led by Julie Serences and Robert Sewell (916) 548-0618.

On Sunday, February 15, a trip to Mather Regional Park, at the east end of Mather Field, will be led by Wayne Blunk, (916) 876-0457.

  • GBBC workshops, Feb. 13-16, 9:00-11:00 AM

Audubon Kern River Preserve, 18747 Hwy 178, Weldon, CA
Join our experts to learn about backyard birds, then enter your observations on the GBBC website. This is an outdoor event. Wear appropriate layered clothing, bring binoculars, field guide, and a lawn chair. We will learn how to identify the birds on the feeders. The preserve has extra binoculars for rent if you do not have a pair. Experts will also help identify backyard species from photographs brought to the Friday through Monday workshops.

Take exit 14 off I-95; Spur 25; 3 miles west to Hwy 17; right on Hwy. 17; Park at the waterfront park, make a right on 1st street (before the bridge).
Help identify and count the birds at our feeding stations and along our beautiful riverwalk for the GBBC. Birding checklists will be provided. We will be building bluebird houses at the waterfront pavilion at 11:00 AM. where you can also learn how to monitor nesting boxes. Come together as citizen scientists and join other families at SCEE to learn how to identify local birds and gather info about bird populations for the GBBC. Learn the basics of bird identification and feeding while taking part in the GBBC with Jennings education staff and the Bartramian Audubon Society. Use your new skills to observe birds and submit your own data at home. Count birds for the GBBC at the Nolde Center’s C.H. McConnell Hall. You will learn how to identify a wide variety of birds found throughout the Midlands of South Carolina. Ninety Six National Historic Site, 1103 Hwy 248, Ninety Six, SC
Here's a chance to spend time outdoors,l earn about birds in the area, and participate in the GBBC. Checklists and information will be provided.  A local bird expert, Rusty Wilson, and Park Ranger, Melinda M Zupon, will be lead the walks. The first walk will begin at the Visitor Center at 8:00 AM.  After a short introduction, visitors will walk to the Star Fort Pond area counting birds along the way. The easy walk will only be approximately 1 mile.  Another more strenuous walk will start at the Star Fort Pond (located along Kinard Road) at 10:00 AM and be approximately 2 ½ miles. Visitors should dress accordingly, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring cameras and binoculars.

The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) will be teaming up with Purple Crayon Productions to celebrate the 12th annual GBBC.  This event is free with VINS Nature Center admission.  Adults and children of all ages are invited to spend Valentine’s Day discovering and learning about the birds found at VINS Nature Center. VINS staff members will provide instruction to children and adults on how to spot and identify birds and, at the end of the count, will report the total number and variety of birds identified to the GBBC website.  Purple Crayon Productions will lead children in the creation of nature-themed craft projects to take home. Virginia

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden & parts of the James River Park, Richmond, VA
Join Tyler Turpin to tally birds in Richmond for the GBBC, starting at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.

-8:00 AM: Meet in the rotunda of the visitor center. Cost for this portion of the day will be $6.00 for non-Ginter members. We'll finish around 9:30 - 9:45 AM.

-10:10 AM: The count will continue on to the James River Park, meeting at the parking lot next to the Tredegar Ironworks to count birds at Brown's Island.

-11:30 AM: Next stop, Pony Pasture Parking lot on Riverside Drive. Foot and count from car assignments are available for the Pony Pasture and Hugenot flatwater areas. Counters are also needed for the 42nd Street area and other areas on the south river bank Counters should return to the parking lot at Pony Pasture at 12:45 PM to tally their sightings.

-1:30 PM: Trip will finish with a check of the lake at the office park behind Stony Point Shopping Center. Sponsored by Richmond Audubon.

The Seward Park Audubon Center will host two days of family friendly bird-counting opportunities. Community members are welcome to join staff and volunteers inside the warmth of the Center to count the birds that visit our back porch feeders for the GBBC.
