Whew!  Thanks everyone for a great count weekend.  Hope everyone had fun.

We're pretty much on track with where we were last year with checklist submissions.  With 60,000 turned in so far, there are at least another 20,000 or so to go.  Everyone has until the end of the month to get their checklists in, but don't procrastinate!  If you haven't submitted all your counts for each day yet, do it as soon as you can.

What if you're done?  You've submitted a count for every bird you saw every place you went each day last weekend.  Well, for one thing you can help us reach our previous record of 623 species counted by helping us round up sightings of birds that were seen last weekend but not reported yet to the GBBC.  If you know of birds that others saw last weekend, that don't show up on the count for your state, province, territory, or the whole count, encourage the original observers to submit a count for that species.  If you can't get them to do that, send us an email and let us know the details of the sighting and we'll see what we can do!

Here's to a great count last weekend, and a great finish over the next two weeks!

Eastern Blue Birds

Posted by Anonymous User at 20-02-2008 09:45

We have two Eastern Blue birds(male and female) that appeared last March and have been here since. We have 7-8 acres in country in Franklin,TN which is in Nashville. These two birds made a nest in a small bird house in tree close to house in June 2007 and after a week or so left. We waited for a month for them to return, but when they did not show up, my husband looked in bird house and found 2 smashed eggs. Now my problem is that every day since June 2007, they come to our kitchen windows and peck on it repetitvely every morning for hours even though they can see us and I open door and send them away. We love these beautiful birds and fear they are going to do harm to themselves. Why do you think they are doing this? I do not believe it is a reflection thing.Do they think we have the eggs? It has been months since they had nest! B. Barnes rivertree@att.net ps I did not count them in my bird count as they were not present at that hour. Record ID:S3521717

Psycho bluebirds

Wow, that's a fun question. I'm not sure of the answer, but would be interested to know if other bluebird house owners have had a similar experience. Once upon a time, a British woman named Len Howard had garden birds that would come and get her if they wanted something in her garden. At least that's what she thought, and would follow them outside to see what they wanted. Who knows, but you gotta love a mystery!

Hi, Don't know how else to get to the compilers. A Grey Catbird was recorded on the above count but not included in the overall compilation. This bird has been in Castlegar and visiting the same feeder for several weeks and has been photographed. The photograph has been verified by Dick Cannings of Bird studies Canada, Peter McIver

Our regional reviewers are volunteers with many other responsibilities. But hopefully they'll see this report soon and add to the database soon.

Photo posting

I submitted several photos on Sat. and Sun. but they've never been posted in the gallery. The submissions went through each time. When will all photos be posted?

Hey Kerri, thanks for submitting your photos. Unfortunately, since we get thousands of photos each year, we can't post them all. Even if they aren't posted, they are still eligible for an award in the photo contest.

thanks for the response Rob, it appears that the first photos submitted were posted and then no more were. So someone will actually look at the thousands of photos to determine the winners?

I am a rank amateur, but enjoy the count. I have participated for two sessions. This year I was in Tahiti - Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine. Are you interested in my count from there?

Hey Bora Bora

Sounds like fun! We aren't set up to enter counts from overseas in our database, but please feel free to share your overseas GBBC here on the blog!

We just spotted a townsends solitaire in our front yard. We've never seen one before. My count has been submitted but I was so excited about seeing it here that I had to mention it.
