Hello, well our first day turned out quite well, and after an extended cold snap which lasted weeks, and saw temperatures pushing -35C, we got a break for day 1 and temperatures climbed to -4. Our first day netted us 32 species, which is not to bad at all but the story for us are Bohemian Waxwings in Saskatoon. Two massive flocks were found, the first was a single flock of ~4000 birds and a second was a flock with 1500, in addition to the smaller flocks found in the city, we tallied over 6400 Waxwings for the day. Eurasian Collared Doves continue to thrive in the province with a total to date of 34 birds, and a new location in Regina, we should have a total of 150 birds for the province when the count is all said and done

estimation
One of the ways that I estimate is to take a small block of birds, and estimate how many in that block. Lets say I feel that this one small block consists of 100 birds, then by the size of the block as a whole I quickly decide if the whole flock is spaced about the same, from there I quickly figure out how many blocks make up the entire flock. This all takes just mere seconds to do, but over time you will get a better handle on your estimates and become even more accurate. One way for me to have verified the estimate is I was birding with a friend, and we both came up with the same estimated number so this creates even more confidence in the numbers seen.

How do you count that many birds. i saw the sky full of geese including snows. How do I count.
