Celebrating the Bald Eagle!

Reports of Bald Eagles in the 2007 GBBC.

The Bald Eagle, a majestic symbol of the wild, was removed from the Endangered Species list on August 8, 2007. The population dropped to 417 pairs in 1963, according to the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Now there are nearly 10,000 pairs in North America, thanks to the banning of the pesticide DDT and other programs to help the species recover.

To celebrate this conservation milestone, we've collected two dozen spectacular images of the Bald Eagle, all taken by participants in the 2007 Great Backyard Bird Count. Enjoy these wonderful photos and this heartening story of success in bringing a species back from the brink.
