The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It's free, fun, and easy-and it helps the birds."

Annual Great Backyard Bird Count at the Children’s Zoo--free with admission price to the Birmingham Zoo. We will have many bird-related activities for all ages from using binoculars and field guides to making bird feeders and even special visits from some of our native education birds to celebrate the GBBC in the Children’s Zoo Alabama Wilds. There will be guided tours to look for resident birds with loaner binoculars available and demonstrations on counting birds in your own backyard with some of our local birding experts from the Birmingham Audubon Society.

Join naturalists in counting birds observed on the mountain for the GBBC. Blank bird checklists can be found at the Treehouse (Nature Center) and returned there to be included in the official count for Ruffner Mountain for Saturday the 18th.  Guided hikes may be available throughout the day. Staff will be available to assist in bird identification, habitats and other essentials for successful bird counting.  Ruffner has a limited supply of loaner binoculars for visitors to use but please bring your own if you have binoculars or scopes. Admission is free but we ask for a $2 donation to help fund the preserve.

We will be leading four guided bird hikes and two “birding by boat” tours for the GBBC. There will also be a session on backyard bird feeding on Saturday. Birders of all skill levels are welcome. Bring your binoculars and a bird guide if possible. Loaner binoculars and tally sheets for the count will be available. A park interpreter will demonstrate how the count works and help you to spot and identify birds. Please dress warmly for boat tours- it is colder and windier on the lake. Hikes are free of charge and you do not need to register. Boat tours are $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free for children under 6. Guided walks will begin at the pavilion at 9:15, 10:15, and 11:15. Craft tables will be open to kids of all ages, weather permitting. Please dress for the weather and wear very comfortable hiking shoes. Binoculars will be available to borrow, but you may want to bring a notebook and a camera. The hatchery is a great spot to participate in the GBBC. It has a few different habitats and, most importantly, there is open water in winter.We will spend about an hour and a half walking around the dikes and woods. Be sure to dress for the weather. Fort Clatsop
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop
Feb. 17-20
On each of the four days of the GBBC, visitors to Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop can learn about participating in the count, record bird numbers in the park, and make plans to count birds in their own backyards.  Binoculars as well as birding and art daypacks will be available for loan within the park during this event. Along with the actual bird counting activities, the park has planned four days of bird-related opportunities:

-- A pink heron scavenger hunt will be ongoing using the Netul River Trail along the Lewis and Clark River.
--  A “Birds of Fort Clatsop” display is in the visitor center lobby.  On Friday, February 17, visitors might encounter a wildlife artist working in the visitor center.
-- On Saturday, February 18, a birding walk will start at 9:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center lobby. Although leashed dogs are welcome at most of the park’s outdoor programs, they are not allowed at this morning walk.  Please dress for the weather.  The walk is wheelchair accessible although non-motorized users might need assistance for about 200 yards.
-- Also on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., a bird-themed children’s crafts, face-painting and education corner will be available in the visitor center.
-- On Sunday, February 19, wildlife biologist Deborah Jaques will talk about Brown Pelicans in the Pacific Northwest at 1 p.m. in the Netul River Room of the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center. This In Their Footsteps program will feature the history of brown pelicans in the Columbia River region, the general ecology of the species, and current research and management topics on the west coast. Bird-themed children’s crafts and face-painting will be available in the afternoon.
-- Presidents’ Day visitors on Monday, February 20 will find the bird-themed crafts, face-painting and education corner available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
as well as rangers to assist with bird identification and counts.

Park hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.  Admission is $3 per adult and free for youth 15 years old and under.  There is no extra fee to participate in any of the activities associated with the Great Backyard Bird Count.  Passes to National Park Service sites are accepted.  A variety of bird field guides are available for purchase at the Lewis & Clark National Park Association bookstore in the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center.

This is the first in a series of citizen-science investigations for homeschooling families. Jennings staff will offer an informative birding session that will include hands-on discovery centers, an introduction to bird identification, guided observation and counting of birds at the feeders, and instructions for participation in the GBBC. You’ll be encouraged to use your new skills to observe birds and submit your own data at home.  This program is designed for ages 5 and up, with a cost of $3.00 per person (maximum $12.00 per family).
