Twas the Night before the Bird Count

My anticipation of counting this weekend

Twas the night before the Bird Count
and all through the house,
the birders were sleeping,
just dreaming of grouse.
They had mapped out their day
to find a Blue Jay,
or perhaps watching owls cathing their prey.
Their scopes were all ready,
their binos were too
don't forget your tripod, your camera, your guide,
or your coffee, a sandwhich or your favorite hot stew.
You can count from your window, our car or on foot,
and if you get lost remember stay put.
What this weekend will bring,
may remind us of spring,
Just remember have fun,
as you are watching a Hun,
and when the weekend has passed,
we will tally our birds,
in the hopes that we have massed,
more species this year than years in the past.

Nice Blog

I've read all the way down the page. Glad to see you are blogging. I like the poem. It's great to be able to check in on what's going on this way. I'm up early here in AZ all ready to count birds, but what did I see at my quail block? A jack-rabbit! I'm a blogger also and you can check out my photos at http://coronadetucson.blogspot.com I'll be back to check in when I'm not busy counting! By the way, it's raining here in Tucson today. ~kathiesbirds

I have participated in this event three years now and inevitably it rains or is cold, LOL. This year is the first year in a new house that is still not yet bird friendly, so from my window, I will only see red-winged black birds. Hopefully, I can get out Sunday or Monday and add more species to my counts. In the meantime, I will live vicariously through your postings :) Vicki In Texas

This is my second year participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. I am counting from my own yard, which is a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat. Check out my count results on my own Blog at: http://habitat.thestateonline.com/

Great poem! Could I have your permission to post it on the Mo-birds list? Believe Missouri birders would enjoy it. reply to Frances Cramer/beanfrangeo@yahoo.com

Bird count poem

Love the bird count poem! May I have your permission to print it out and post it at the nature center I volunteer at? This is my first year participating in the GBBC. It has been a great experience especially when an immature Cooper's Hawk showed up. At least I think it was a Cooper's. Seemed kind of small for a Sharp shinned. Needless to say all the other birds hid and/or left. I sure plan on participating next year too. thanks, Kim from NY
