Do you wish you had someone to share your observations with? Or maybe you'd just like to know more about birds, like why winter finches are abundant some years but not others, or how different bird populations are changing across North America. If so, then you should join the more than 13,000 citizen scientists who are participating in Project FeederWatch, a winter-long survey of North American feeder birds. FeederWatchers count the numbers and kinds of birds that visit their feeders and send their information to the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Researchers at the Lab analyze this data to determine how North American bird populations are changing over time. By learning more about what causes bird populations to decline or expand, we can do more to protect them. To learn more about how to
count for the birds, Some amazing trends in bird populations have already been recorded by Project FeederWatchers. The map below of Common Redpoll shows that this winter finch invades during alternate years.
